The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into force on May 25, 2018, replacing local European country legislation, with a single EU-wide regulation. It protects the personally identifiable information of citizens within the EU, ensuring that the collection, storage and processing of their data has a legal basis. There are significant financial penalties for breaching the GDPR. The EU is currently drafting further regulations that relate to electronic communications.
